Hi, dears! As you remember from my last article that my flight was crazy. And I still didn’t tell you everything about it 😉 First of all, I had a flight to Mattala Airport. ALocation of the airport is somewhere literally in the jungles, haha. It’s pretty new airport, opened in 2013. So not many flights are going there, but my ‘low-cost’ FlyDubai is flying there.
My flight to Mattala Airport from Dubai was via Colombo and as my friend is staying there, of course, I wanted to visit her. But at the registration desk in Kiev, Fly Dubai staff told me, that there is no stop in Colombo. Because they can’t see it in the system and probably aircraft will be just refueled. But somehow we did have a stop in Colombo. Can you imagine the level of my disappointment when I couldn’t get off the plane? And i needed to go all the way back from Hambanthota (a city near Mattala airport) to Colombo? Which is literally not close by, approximately 5-6 hours by crazy Sri Lankan bus.
So that was a time to say – “Calm down, Mary, at least you got to Sri Lanka”.
Some small tips if you are in Mattala airport
Here I’m gonna write you some tips if you land in Mattala airport. It’s small, empty and most people are not flying there. Tuk-tuk drivers will tell you that there are no buses from the airport. But there are buses. There are also shuttle buses for people working in the airport so feel free to negotiate with driver and get to Hambanthota for 100lkr (~0.66$).
Bus for Airport workers
From Hambanthota you can go by bus to any place. I was going to Colombo. But get ready that it’s gonna be a loooong ride. Uh, Sri Lankan buses are a separate story. Drivers are competing with each other to make their bus more colorful and more entertainment offers 😀 Btw, there should be AC buses also, I haven’t used them, but you can check here.
Cool sound systems which will help you to enjoy your trip in Sri Lankan buses 🙂
So if you managed to get from Mattala airport to Colombo – great. In the next post, I will try to tell you where to go there 🙂
